TAIPEI, Taiwan – The Tourism Bureau yesterday said that it hoped the launch of Emirates Airlines’ passenger flight service from Taipei to Dubai next year would help draw more Muslim tourists to Taiwan.

The Dubai-based airline announced at a press conference in Taipei yesterday plans to launch the daily flight service between Taipei and Dubai on Feb. 10.

Tourism Bureau Director-General David Hsieh said the nation has been trying to attract more Muslim tourists.

The new flight service would connect Taiwan with major Muslim markets and increase the numbers of those visitors to Taiwan, he said.

Currently, most Muslim visitors to Taiwan come from Southeast Asia, including from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Wei Sheng-chih, vice president of Taoyuan International Airport Corp, said the airline has 44 Airbus 380 aircrafts.

He added that the Taipei-Dubai route would be the nation’s first flight service to the Middle East, and the Emirates would be the first new airline to establish operations in the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Liu Rongzhu, vice president of the airline’s Greater China area, said Emirates had launched cargo flight services in 2003, and the demand was continuing to increase.

He said that the company decided to launch passenger flight services from Taiwan next year, with one daily flight to Dubai.

“Not only will the service allow people in Taiwan to fly directly to the Middle East, but they can also transfer from there to go to Europe or Africa through our flight network,” Liu said. “We can also help bring visitors from the Middle East and Europe to Taiwan.”
