At the farm, they held key debates on political and military policy and strategy. It was at Lilies leaf farm that the most prominent leaders of South Africaโ€™s struggle against Apartheid sought shelter, and attended meetings. Some of these included Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki (Father of South Africaโ€™s current president Thabo Mbeki), Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Bram Fischer, Joe Slovo, Ruth First, Raymond Mhaba, Rusty Bernstein, Bob Hepple, Harold Wolpe, and Denis Goldberg. Many of these individuals were discovered in the policeโ€™s raid on Liliesleaf farm, and tried in the subsequent Rivonia Treason Trial.

A one-roomed house, located down a narrow alleyway, flanked by houses, leads to a room used by Nelson Mandela a. Before moving into this house, Nelson Mandela stayed at the Anglican Church, one street away. He lived in Alexandra for a short while in 1941 and ’42 at what is now called Mandela’s Yard, occupying the single back room of the house owned by the Xhoma family at 46 Seventh Avenue
