MINSK, Belarus – Belarus is interesting for tourists as a country for weekend tours, Bjorn Stenvers, an international marketing expert in the field of culture, one of the creators of the brand “I amsterdam”, told reporters on 5 December. Bjorn Stenvers is taking part in an international forum to discuss the image of Belarus and its advantages, BelTA has learnt.

Bjorn Stenvers thinks that Belarus can use Amsterdam’s experience of city promotion. He said that not only the capital but also other cities should be advertised in the international market. Brest may become one of the most interesting places for tourists in Belarus. The expert pointed out that canal tours top the list of the most interesting activities for tourists in Amsterdam. They are followed by museums and culinary tourism. “I would like to note that the Belarusian cuisine is your key product for attracting tourists,” Bjorn Stenvers said.

Bjorn Stenvers called the tradition of welcoming guests with bread and salt while dressed in Belarusian national costumes a good idea for the country’s image. “All tourists enjoy such a tradition because for us it is unusual. We in Amsterdam will also try to copy Belarus when it comes to meeting people and showing hospitality,” he added.

Bjorn Stenvers also said Belarusian landscapes should be used more heavily in advertising. However, he advised not to use hunting themes despite the fact that many Europeans prefer hunting tourism. “Belarus boasts beautiful nature and Europeans like everything connected with eco-tourism. They are also interested in Belarusian folklore. Such people as Marc Chagall or Kazimir Malevich became a kind of Belarus’ brand long ago. They advertise this country, which is why tourists are interested in Belarusian museums, too,” Bjorn Stenvers noted. At the same time they would like to visit unusual installations and exhibitions of contemporary art.

Asked whether the forthcoming 2014 IIHF World Championship will attract a considerable number of tourists to Belarus the expert remarked: “The abolition of visas for fans is a great image-enhancing measure. Belarus has all the necessary resources for attracting tourists. You just need to put more efforts into advertising the country.”
