Most effective weapon to fend off Somali pirates is heading to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (eTN) – At first, it read like a normal April Fool’s Day joke, but it turned out to be true. Verified and confirmed by British military officials the music of Britney Spears is their “best” weapon in fending off Somali pirates.

UK navy officer Rachel Owens has told The Mirror: “Her songs have been chosen by the security team accompanying our tankers because they thought the pirates would hate them most. These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect.”

Britney’s top hits “Baby One More Time” and “Oppss..I Did it Again” are “so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns – as soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney they move on as quickly as they can,” Owens told told the UK newspaper.

Given Owens’ ship, which measures 383 yard-long, “There are a lot of lives and cargo at stake so security is of prime importance,” she was quoted as saying.

While loathed by Somali pirates, Britney Spears has become America’s favorite hot-mess. Her personal turmoils are constantly on public display (thanks to overly obsessive paparazzi that follow her every move), which have resulted to career hiccups. Who can forget the media frenzy that followed her humiliating 2007 VMA Music Awards performance? Most recently, in 2012, her tumultuous run as a judge on the US version of the X Factor show?

However, the former Disney princess is showing signs that she has gotten her groove back. She is set to drop a new album (called Britney Jean) and her name will soon be flashed all over the Neon Jungle (aka Vegas Strip). The pop princess has signed on to do a two-year residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, beginning December 27.

Karl Leftwich and Kalaea Lake are among those who are eagerly waiting for Britney’s show in the Neon Jungle. “I’m so proud of her,” said Leftwich. “I admire her for showing the world that she is a strong person, that she can pick herself up despite what she has gone through.”

Lake, upon watching Britney’s new video, said: “Get it, Merna! She looks good and she looks like she’s in control. This is the real Britney. I love this video!“

Both Vegas residents, Leftwich and Lake said they “cannot wait” to see Britney’s show. “I’m going to be Britney’s new best friend,” joked Leftwich. “I respect her a lot more now, and I’m really rooting for her to do well.”

Meanwhile, pirates preying on cruise and cargo vessels crossing the Indian Ocean, particularly in the Horn of Africa, have become a problem from hell for Africa and allied governments. The problem has escalated in the last decade, promoting an international tribunal set up by the Security Council under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter in 2010 authorizing the use of force is among several options to prosecute pirates operating off the Somali coast.

Tourist destinations such as Seychelles and Kenya are on record expressing their concern for the safety of their cruise tourists. In 2008, 111 vessels were attacked, that number nearly doubled to 217 in 2009. The number has gone down to 176 in 2011, but 25 of attacks succeeded. Perhaps, the UN should send Britney Spears a thank you note?
