French tourist found dead in Silverwater jail

Jul 23, 2008

Frenchman who had been in Australia for only a month has been found dead in a Sydney prison cell, after being locked up during last week's World Youth Day for allegedly exposing himself to a pilgrim.

Herve Youdom, 27, was found dead in his cell at Silverwater jail some time before noon yesterday. Investigators are waiting for the results of an autopsy before stating the cause of death.

Youdom was arrested on Friday after an incident in which he was alleged to have exposed himself and then resisted police when they tried to arrest him.

He spent Friday night in a police cell at Surry Hills before being refused bail and transferred to the Metropolitan Reception and Remand Centre at Silverwater jail, where he spent the weekend.

A spokesman for the French consulate said Youdom was a tourist and not a pilgrim at World Youth Day, as had been reported.

Youdom had arrived in Australia on June 18 on a three-month tourist visa. When he was arrested he refused French consular assistance and appeared to have psychiatric issues, the spokesman said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrective Services confirmed the death in custody, but said early reports that Youdom was naked when he was found were incorrect.
