Seychelles Minister for Tourism issues message for Tourism Day 2013:

As the Community of Nations joins together to mark Tourism Day 2013, it is important for Seychelles, a country whose economy remains dependent on that very industry, to reflect on our successes to date and to take note of the challenges ahead.

The United Nation’s World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is celebrating the 2013 Tourism Day around the theme “Tourism & Water: Protecting our Common Future.” This theme is especially relevant for Seychelles because as mid-ocean islands, water is a valuable asset and resource. We continue to face the challenge of producing a 365-day uninterupted supply of water that is our population’s lifeline and one of tourism’s most precious resources.

As stated by the UNWTO, tourism remains the largest economic sector, and it is, therefore, our responsibility to take a leadership role and ensure that companies invest in adequate water management throughout the value chain.

As we celebrate 2013 World Tourism Day, let us reflect on the importance of tourism for our country. When tourism is working, every business man and woman in Seychelles feels the positive effects of that vibrant industry. Every Seychellois must by now know, or they should know, that they also reap directly or indirectly the benefits of a successful tourism industry, and this is why we should use World Tourism Day 2013 to remind everyone not to saw through the branch we are all seated upon.
