Two storm systems kill at least 41 in Mexico and strand thousands of tourists

Mexico was hit by a double dose of tropical storms in the form of Tropical Storm Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Mexico was hit by a double dose of tropical storms in the form of Tropical Storm Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm. Fourteen have been confirmed dead in the coastal state of Guerrero in Mexico, perishing from landslides, drowning in flood waters, and in one instance by crashing on a slippery highway. Three more people died in Hidalgo, another three in Puebla, and one more person in Oaxaca.

In the tourist resort area of Acapulco, a Guerrero official, Constantino Gonzalez, reported that 21 people were killed when buildings collapsed and roads became raging rivers. “Unfortunately, the majority of the deaths have occurred here in Acapulco due to landslides that completely buried homes,” he said.

Mexico’s Interior Minister, Miguel Osorio Chong, said the storms have affected two-thirds of the entire national territory with Acapulco sustaining major damage and called the flooding “historic.” The resort’s international airport remained closed due to power failure, as were two major highways.

Along Mexico’s Gulf coast in the state of Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte reported that 12 people had died after their bus and two nearby homes were buried by a mountain landslide near the town of Xaltepec. The Governor further reported that across the state, 23,000 people were evacuated from their homes and 9,000 remained in emergency shelters.

According to the US National Hurricane Center (USNHC), Ingrid is moving inland at approximately 10 miles per hour, beginning landfall in the port of Tampico. The USNHC predicted the storm will make a westerly turn and subsequent to that a west-southwest turn, bringing maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, gusting higher at times. It is expected that the storm will continue to weaken the further inland it travels. More than 7,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas as the hurricane neared on Sunday.

Tropical Storm Manuel made landfall near the port of Manzanillo and quickly began losing strength and dissipating altogether by Monday. Heavy rains caused some rivers to overflow in Guerrero and more than 1,000 homes in Veracruz were damaged with communications hampered for many hours as well. According to reports, 12 bridges were damaged along with 20 highways. One bridge collapsed near the city of Misantla, which cut off road travel to Xalapa, the state capital.

Officials said thousands of tourists were stranded due to canceled flights and closed highways.
