America: The land of… hateful tweets?

Some Netizens from the US are once again abuzz and creating digital wildfire with hateful messages, following the crowning Sunday night of New York’s very own Nina Davuluri as 2014’s Miss America.

Forget the fact that Miss Davuluri just made history as the first East Indian American. Some just chose to announce their hatred instead of celebrating diversity, which the US of A is widely known all over the world for.

The melting pot of ethnicities? Not if these guys and girls who obviously are in dire need of both geography and grammar lessons. “She is Arab,” many bemoaned. Arab? When has India been an Arab country? I would wager that these ignorant folks don’t even know the difference between Indian Americans and American Indians or why Native Americans are called “Indians” in the first place.

It is ironic that I am very much looking forward to coming home to the country that I love after having been gone for full entire month. If more Americans traveled more often, then there would be less likely to be so insensitive.

Yes, America is truly a great nation, so let’s keep it that way by celebrating diversity, instead of flaming the fire of hatred through ignorance. After all, as many of you haters, this. is. America. And part of what makes America beautiful is the colorful faces that comprise its population. Diversity is in our country’s DNA.
