Butor, India: former tourism paradise

There is a small village in India in Moldova, and this village has only ten residents. This village is in the Butor commune of the Grigoriopolsky region of Moldova on the left coast of the Dnestr River. Once this district was famous for its unusual landscapes and tourism, but today there are only broken roads that remain – not a single shop or school is there, and there is no gas pipeline.

Butor is composed of two villages, Butor and India. It is currently under the administration of the breakaway government of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic.

Grigoriopol, popularly known as the Grigoriopolsky area, is a city in Transnistria, Moldova. The city is located on the left (eastern) bank of the river Dniester in central Transnistria.

This Indian village has a curious story about the origin of its name. This village was called โ€œparadise on the Earthโ€ and was very popular among tourists of the former USSR. Now the broken road that leads to the village is traveled only by a few local elderly inhabitants. The village became deserted and abandoned due to constant heavy flooding. There was only one exit – the only road that connects it to rest of India is on a map, because India is surrounded by the Arabian Sea. Locals say they donโ€™t want to leave the village, despite its lack of conveniences.

โ€œWe so are proud of that we live in India. I go to Kishinev, and [when asked] where were you โ€ฆ I answer, in India! Here I sunbathed, had a rest. โ€ฆ But Iโ€™m sorry [this has] now happened to the village. I, as the doctor, would open here a sanatorium for children,โ€ says one old resident. Many of the inhabitants of India hope that sooner or later there will come happy times again, and their village will blossom.
