LIVINGSTONE, Zambia (eTN) – Mauro Maiani has been appointed as Commissioner General of San Marino to the Milan World Expo 2015, it was announced at the ongoing United Nations World Tourism Organizationsโ€™ (UNWTO) 20th General Assembly.

โ€œI am very happy about this choice. Since I arrived in the Ministry of Tourism in April 2013, I have considered Expo Milan 2015 as the most important opportunity of international promotion of our country,โ€ San Marino Tourism Minister Teodoro Lonfernini said. โ€œBy appointing the commissioner general, the government has concluded the first step of the participation project together with the choice about the modality of participation choosing to rent a one module exhibition space of 125 sqm located in the โ€œbio-mediterraneum cluster.โ€

San Marino, the smallest and oldest republic in the world, is located in northern Italy and its territory is 60 sqkm and its population is 33,000 inhabitants.

Mauro Maiani has a large professional experience on the field of hotellerie and tourism and especially in the Expos having being appointed twice as Commissioner General of San Marino at World Expo Lisbon 1998 and Shanghai 2010.

Since 2006, he has covered the position of delegate of San Marino to the Bureau International des Exposition (BIE) in Paris. In 2012, he was chosen from BIE secretary general to take part with others international experts in the inquiry mission to Astana (Kazakhstan) to check and assess the candidacy of Astana to organize Expo 2020.

Mr. Maiani is a San Marino citizen and was born in Ravenna (Italy) on 29 December 1957. He currently resides in Fiorentino (Republic San Marino). He graduated summa com laude in 1993 in Portuguese modern language and literature at University โ€œCa Foscariโ€ in Venice, Italy and obtained in 2002 a Master Degree on Communications at the University of San Marino.

Further, he attended a specialization course in hotel front-office management in 1995 at School of Hotel Administration – Cornell University โ€“ Ithaca, NY (USA) and in tourist marketing in 1999 at School of Business Management, SDA, University โ€œLuigi Bocconiโ€ Milan (Italy) and, in 2002, he was admitted to the diplomatic career and appointment as First Embassy Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of San Marino.

He is currently the head of international relations of the Tourist department at Ministry of Tourism of San Marino and he is in charge of the relations with the international tourism organizations, such as the Madrid-based United Nations World Tourism Organization, Paris-based in Madrid Bureau International des Expositions, and the Brussels-based European Travel Commission.

Mr. Maiani is fluent in Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and German and has basic knowledge of Russian. He is a freelance journalist and member of the San Marino Union of Journalists) and of the World Federation of Journalists and Travel Writers.
