A male passenger onboard AirTran Airways flight 265 headed for Austin, Texas, attempted to commit suicide by trying to open an emergency door at the rear of the plane while in flight so he could leap from the aircraft. The aircraft was carrying 120 passengers with a flight crew of 5 onboard.
According to one of the passengers, the man said he didnโt want to live. Members of the military who were onboard detained the suicidal man and kept an eye on him until the aircraft landed.
The incident occurred while the plane was over Little Rock, Arkansas, so the plane was diverted to land at the nearest airport in Memphis, Tennessee, at around 6:30 pm.
The man was taken off the plane by airport police, and passengers deplaned and were interviewed by authorities on the incident. The FBI interviewed the man for two hours. It has not been determined if charges will be filed.
Flight 265 resumed its service and headed for Austin at approximately 8:30 pm.
