Manado to host Coral Triangle Initiative Senior Officials Meeting

Senior officials of the six members of the world’s Coral Triangle Initiative, namely: Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Timor Leste will meet in Manado, capital of North Sulawesi from August 20-26. The meeting will discuss joint action plans on how to further conserve and sustain some of the world’s treasures of pristine coral resources. Also attending will be officials from the United States and Australia.

The Coral Triangle encompasses 75,000 square kilometers of reefs, of which 51,000 sq km. are in Indonesia, comprising no less than 18% of total world reefs.

Some of the most spectacular Indonesian national marine parks in this area are the Bunaken-Manado Tua National Park, situated right at the doorstep of the city of Manado, Taka Bonerate in South Sulawesi, Wakatobi in South-east Sulawesi, The Togean islands in Central Sulawesi, the Derawan archipelago in East Kalimantan, Banda and Ambon in the Maluku seas, Raja Ampat in West Papua, Komodo and Riung Islands near Flores in East Nusatenggara, to name a few.

The first Coral Triangle Initiative Summit was also held in Manado in 2009. The forthcoming Senior Officials Meeting will also discuss the establishment and operation of the office of the CTI Permanent Secretariat, reports Kompas daily.
