NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar – The government is planning to establish ecotourism base camps in Chin State’s Riah Lake, Bwaypar Mountain and Zeinmu Mountain in Laibar area, Minister of Environmental Conservation and Forestry Win Tun said last week.

According to the Minister, the three new sites will be additions to the already existing ecotourism sites in Chin State – Nat Ma Taung National Park and Kyaukpadaung Taung National Park.

“Ecotourism services can be provided in places like Riah Lake and the Nat Ma Taung. Transportation is crucial in order to do this. Guest houses are also needed for the tourists. I heard that a building is being built at the Riah Lake but I don’t know whether it will be used for tourism industry or not,” said a local resident of Chin State.

Locals say Nat Ma Taung in southern Chin State receives more eco-tourists than the state’s northern areas.

“If we are going to provide eco-tourism service, we need to cooperate with local and foreign entrepreneurs. The government also needs to allow this after drafting a law. Otherwise, it will be like building castles in the air. I myself have been planning to do this but nothing has been accomplished yet. The Chin State government should lead this issue,” said Chin State MP Zozam.

Minister of Environmental Conservation and Forestry Win Tun said during the parliamentary session that the government is drafting a principle project for Myanmar tourism industry in cooperation with respective tourism services and experts.

The government will also draft procedures and rules and regulations for ecotourism which the tourism services have to follow after the project has been approved, he added.
