Tourists from Chiang Mai, Thailand killed at the Grand Canyon

Aram Kawewong and wife Ratchaya Tantranon, both 20, were among a group of tourists struck by lightning on Tuesday at the LeFevre Overlook. This is about 30 miles north of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The two tourists, from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities had been withheld pending notification kin, the sheriff’s office said.

The lightning bolt also struck and injured a boy who was traveling with another group of adults.

In April 2013 a German tourist and five other people were injured.
A 64-year-old woman fell to the ground after a lightning strike near the group. All efforts at resuscitation failed.

They were part of a group of tourists near Mohave Point, on the southern edge of the canyon when lightning struck at about 1:45 am local time.

Red rocks of the Grand Canyon attracts tourists worldwide. It is visited by more than 4.5 million tourists a year.
