West Indies resort walks away with tourism awards

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe member, the Sugar Ridge Resort in St. Mary’s, Antigua, in the West Indies, walked away with 2 awards at the recent Antigua Hotel & Tourism Awards (AHTA) Gala.

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe member, the Sugar Ridge Resort in St. Mary’s, Antigua, in the West Indies, walked away with 2 awards at the recent Antigua Hotel & Tourism Awards (AHTA) Gala. The AHTA Tourism Awards recognize examples of excellence in the industry, and this year the merits of 2 individuals at the Sugar Ridge Resort were acknowledged for their outstanding efforts: Ms. Ava Mason and her Green Team took home the “Sustainable Tourism Award 2013,” and Mr. Vorn Johnson, the shuttle driver at Sugar Ridge, was crowned the “Tourism Personality of the Year 2013.”

The event was held at Sandals Grand Antigua Resort – 9 individuals and 3 tourism stakeholders emerged of a top of a pool of 57 nominees, to be awarded in various categories. Deserving employees were nominated by the general managers at each resort.

Since its opening in December 2009 this luxury Sugar Ridge Resort has demonstrated a firm commitment to meet the highest international standards in regards to the environment, conservation, and corporate social responsibility. Sugar Ridge Resort’s green initiatives did outstanding work, promoting awareness and sustainable practices on all levels.

In conjunction with the Antigua and Barbuda National Solid Waste Authority, the Sugar Ridge Resort is working on a nationwide successful recycling system helping to ensure that recycling in the island becomes part of the social order. The resort implemented a comprehensive reuse and recycle program, and in 2012, a total of 325 pounds of aluminum cans, 1572 pounds of steel cans, 1390 pounds of mixed plastics, and 152 pounds of PET plastics were collected.
