Hindus have applauded His Holiness Pope Francis for greeting the migrants, highlighting their plight and condemning the “globalization of indifference” towards them in his Lampedusa Island (Italy) visit on July eight.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, calling it a “step in the right direction,” pointed out that religion told us to help the helpless.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that the world should be more kind to migrants and refugees, who might be fleeing persecution and discrimination, as we were all equal in the eyes of God. Moreover, morality dictated us to provide hope to the uprooted people and ancient scripture Isha Upanishad told us that Lord was enshrined in the hearts of all.

Rajan Zed agreed with Pope’s viewpoint on the issue: “We are a society that has forgotten the experience of weeping, of ‘suffering with’: the globalization of indifference has taken from us the ability to weep!”

Zed urged Pope Francis to take up the cause of about 15-million Roma (Gypsy) populace of Europe who faced apartheid conditions. It was a sin to watch Roma brothers and sisters in Europe suffer maltreatment day after day and do nothing, Zed added.
