Parish churches are to be encouraged to open their doors to tourists under plans approved by the Church of England on Sunday.

Members of the Church's ruling body, the General Synod, have backed calls for the creation of a tourism group in each of the 44 dioceses to boost interest in church buildings.

Roy Thompson, from Sheriff Hutton, York, said church tourism was a chance to spread a better understanding of the Christian story as well as a boost to the economy.
