DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (eTN) – The Swiss international hotel chain operating as Movenpick Hotels and Resorts has signed an agreement to construct a premier Movenpick tourist hotel in Tanzania’s northern tourist circuit in meeting demands for more guest rooms.

Having been operating in Tanzania since 2005 with the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel in the coastal capital city of Dar es Salaam, the chain now plans to build its new hotel at the foot of Mt. Meru in Arusha under agreement with a Tanzanian company registered as Taninvest Group of Companies.

“With its hotel in Dar es Salaam, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has made an excellent name for itself, one which stands for high quality standards, uncompromising service and culinary expertise,” Mr. Paul Lyimo, the Tanzania partner and chairman of Tanivest Group said.

The new hotel will have 200 rooms. It will be built on a 100-acre farmland in Usa River area between the northern tourist city of Arusha and the Kilimanjaro International Airport, an entry point to northern Tanzania’s tourist circuit.

With the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro near it, the hotel is also the ideal starting point for safaris and excursions, Mr. Lyimo said.

Two restaurants, a conference centre for 400 guests, an spa complex and an 18-hole golf course will be added to the newly planned hotel to open its doors in 2011. “We’re particularly proud of the association with Taninvest Group of Companies, and we’re delighted to be able to expand our presence in Tanzania further with this exceptional resort,” Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts senior vice-president (Africa) Josef Kufer said. “The hotels in Dar es Salaam and Arusha will provide excellent synergies and we’re confident that we shall be expanding further in Tanzania in the near future.”

Movenpick Hotels and Resorts, an upscale hotel management company with 12, 000 employees, is represented through over 90 hotels existing or under construction in 26 countries with a concentration in its core markets of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The international hotel group with the roots in Switzerland is expanding and has a stated objective of increasing its hotel portfolio to 100 by the year 2010. With two hotel types, business and conference hotels, as well as holiday resorts, Movenpick Hotels and Resorts has clearly positioned itself in the upscale segment.

The hotel group stands for uncompromising product and service quality and is owned by Movenpick Holding 66.7 percent and kingdom Group 33.3 percent.
