InterContinental Vienna adds Green Globe Certification to its international credentials

Green Globe today announces the certification of InterContinental Hotel Vienna, Austria.

Green Globe today announces the certification of InterContinental Hotel Vienna, Austria. This global award provides independent verification of the hotel’s sustainable practices, all of which have been implemented as part of IHG’s Green Engage™ program.

Guido Bauer, CEO of Green Globe Certification commented: “We have been working with global hotel and resort brands across 80 countries, and we know that sustainability is considered a key part of growth and prosperity of international chains as well as destinations and their people. During the Green Globe certification of InterContinental Hotel Vienna, we discovered and verified the sustainability initiatives the hotel has adopted and developed as part of IHG’s own global environmental program, IHG Green Engage. Data gathered from more than three years of Green Engage has shown that on average IHG hotels have achieved a 11.7% reduction in energy usage per available room night, which is a tremendous saving for their hotels and the environment.”

Thomas Legner, General Manager of InterContinental Vienna commented: “After enrolling in the IHG Green Engage programmed in 2009, the InterContinental Vienna has explored new ways of saving energy and waste to help reduce our carbon footprint. This has resulted in the launch of a number of initiatives, including offering e-cars and e-bikes to guests and members of our local community. In 2012, we were awarded the Austrian Ecolabel and are delighted to have achieved Green Globe certification as recognition of our environmental and societal initiatives and commitments.”

The IHG Green Engage programmed supports hotels in their effort to become “green” through reducing energy, water and waste consumption. Over 2,300 IHG hotels are enrolled in the program. IHG have worked with Green Globe to develop a streamlined certification process for IHG Green Engage™ hotels seeking third party recognition.
