LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe announced certification of three Karisma Hotel properties: El Dorado Royale Spa Resort, El Dorado Casitas Royale, and Azul Fives Hotel, located at the beaches of the Mayan Riviera, in Mexico. Karisma Hotels & Resorts has taken significant steps to form their own sustainability culture among collaborators, guests, shareholders, and suppliers, allowing a more efficient use of all their natural, social, and cultural resources. Their dedication to create an eco-friendly environment has an impact on the entire local tourism sector in the area.

โ€œIn regards to sustainability, 2012 was a year of great achievements for the El Dorado Spa Hotels & Resorts and Azul Hotels by Karisma,โ€ said David Ortegon-Martinez, Corporate Sustainable Development Coordinator with Karisma Hotels & Resorts, โ€œWe focused on the construction of a Sustainable Management System, allowing us to start implementing sustainable principles into our daily operation. It is our goal to make our properties more efficient and competitive, and we are very proud to earn the prestigious Green Globe award. Each of our properties promotes an environment of respect and teamwork, and our staff members benefit from a variety of workshops and training supporting the Mayan culture, gender equity and human rights.โ€

As a result of the green initiatives, all of the seven Karisma properties at the Mayan Riviera achieved Green Globe certification in 2012, demonstrating the commitment to sustainable practices in this destination. Some of the major achievements include an average reduction of 11% water consumption and 12% electrical energy consumption. All Karisma certified properties use biodegradable cleaning products, and the use of laundry detergents was lowered by 32%.

Improved recycling procedures showed an 8% increase in the income obtained from waste management, including more than 3,000 liters of used vegetable oil, which was processed and turned into biodiesel for a local authorized company. Karismaโ€™s plans for 2013 include integrating their Sustainable Management System with the Quality Management System, and aligning all initiatives and projects to achieve the best possible use of the resources available.

Green Globe Certificationโ€™s CEO, Guido Bauer, commented: โ€œWe are very pleased to award certification to the El Dorado Royale and Azul Fives Hotels by Karisma. Those properties impress with outstanding commitment to protect the environment and contribution to the sustainable development at the Mayan Riviera. In May 2013 the Karisma Hotels & Resorts will launch their Passion for Sustainability campaign โ€“ totally renewed โ€“ to show their guests, employees, suppliers, and shareholders the benefits of a more sustainable and competitive operation.โ€
