LIMA, Peru – The Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) has predicted that Peru will receive ten million tourists by 2020, potentially making the Peruvian hospitality market one of the top tourist destinations in South America.

According to AH&LA, the number of hotels in the country will increase to 25,000 eight years from now, including 1,000 five-star hotels.

“These figures or estimates are comparable with the situation in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, which is the objective of Peru in 2020,” said Jaime Mesia, managing director for Latin America, Spain, and Portugal at AH&LA.

Mesia noted that Peru is strongly positioned within the Andean market and the goal is to stay close to the markets of Brazil, Mexico or Argentina.

“At the pace we are going, by 2020 Peru will be one of the most important tourism countries in the region, especially in South America, as long as investment in construction of hotels and security does not slow down,” he said.

Mesia stressed that Peru needs more three-, four- and five-star hotels for tourists coming from the United States or Europe, and said there should be more emphasis on corporate tourism, which accounts for 70 percent of the total market in Latin America.
