Delta inaugurates direct service from JFK to Princess Juliana International Airport

SIMPSON BAY, St.

SIMPSON BAY, St. Maarten – Delta Air Lines inaugurated a new weekly Saturday year-round direct service to Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on Saturday, December 15, 2012 as part of its announced expansion into the Caribbean. This is in addition to its direct flights from Atlanta.

“We’re very happy to welcome this new service from JFK by Delta,” said Regina LaBega, managing director of the Princess Juliana International Airport operating company, PJIAE NV.

“This is our key source market for tourists and an additional direct service from New York would further boost arrivals from there because visitors now have an additional choice of a carrier,” LaBega said.

“Besides,” she continued, “New York is now an important hub for Delta, seeing that it has made it a major global gateway with 136 peak-day departures to 82 destinations all over the world.”

Commenting on the airline’s expansion of services to the Caribbean, Delta’s vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean, Nicolas Ferri, reportedly said, “It’s another step toward achieving our goal of becoming the best U.S. airline in Latin America, offering not only a unique experience for business travelers but also the best choice for leisure travel.”

The additional flights is Delta’s response to increased demand for more connections between New York and key Caribbean tourist destinations like St. Maarten, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Aruba, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

According to Delta, now New York City’s largest and fastest-growing carrier, is part of a $1.2 billion expansion project that will turn JFK’s Terminal 4 into a state-of-the-art international gateway, increasing the terminal’s capacity by one-third. The facility is expected to open in the second quarter of 2013.

Delta offers service to more destinations from New York-LaGuardia and New York-JFK combined than any other airline. It is also upgrading its schedule at JFK so passengers can have easy convenient connections to international flights.
