LOS ANGELES, California – Just a few months after achieving Green Globe certification this year in May, the Hotels van Oranje in Noordvijk, in the Netherlands, has been announced “Green Hotel of the Year” at the European Hospitality Awards 2012. The event, which was held at London’s luxurious Landmark Hotel, saw over 300 hospitality professionals come together to celebrate the achievements within the industry over the past 12 months.

A total of 13 awards were presented during the course of the evening with the winners being selected by an expert panel of judges. This year’s panel included a variety of CEOs, Presidents, and a Michelin Star Chef from the hospitality industry, all of whom gave some glowing feedback on those victorious entries. The European Hospitality Awards are among the most prestigious awards in the hotel sector.

“A unique performance, of which we are very proud of,” commented Jaap Liethof, General Manager at the Hotels van Oranje, “This award fits perfect with our business model, where corporate social responsibility has grown to become the core value.”

Judges’ comments on the Hotels van Oranje’s “Green Hotel of the Year” award: “We were impressed by the manner in which the operators have clearly recognized that a fully-integrated sustainability program must do more than just improve hotel performance. While achieving considerable reductions in energy consumption, considerable efforts have also been made to educate staff and reach out into the wider community, creating a property clearly committed to both personal responsibility and informing, empowering, and improving its surrounding environment.”

Other nominees in this category were the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in Stockholm, Hotel TOPAZZ in Vienna, and the Savoy Hotel in London. This last hotel recently re-opened their doors after a major renovation of 2 years. “It is an enormous honor to be nominated together with these beautiful hotels, and we are very proud to have won this award,” noted Jaap Liethof.

The Hotels van Oranje are continuously improving and upgrading in and around the hotel, in light of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The property implemented a long-term sustainability management system, energy goals are strictly monitored. A water reduction plan and comprehensive waste separation are in place to minimize the environmental impact, and the property follows a strict recycling and reuse policy. All the public areas are provided with LED lighting, Beachclub O. was built with sustainable products and materials, and all sales employees are driving in company cars with very low emissions.

Green Globe Certification’s CEO, Guido Bauer, said: “We are thrilled about this wonderful success of the Hotels van Oranje and would like to send our congratulations to the property! Within a very short period of time the Hotels van Oranje accomplished a milestone and leads by example in the Dutch hotel industry.”
