Sudan and South Sudan on the road of cooperation and peace

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following is being released by the Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan:

Another milestone towards peace was achieved yesterday in Addis Ababa with the conclusion of the extensive negotiations which brought to bear a monumental agreement between Sudan and South Sudan. The document signed by President Bashir and President Kiir makes, among other things, key provisions for border security, nationality and financial and economic cooperation. This is yet another clear testament that peace can indeed prevail, and an occasion which once again highlights the resolve and commitment of the two countries to peace and security.

Sudan is grateful for the vital role played by the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel under the very auspicious leadership of President Mbeki and his team whose determination and commitment to the cause has consistently sought to match Sudan’s fervent pursuit for peace. We extend our utmost gratitude to both regional and international actors, including the government and people of Ethiopia, the African Union, IGAD representatives, and the United Nations for their supportive role in the lengthy and exhaustive negotiations.

The embassy also acknowledges and welcomes the U.S. State Department’s compliments with regards to this achievement and remains mindful that the outstanding issues critical to the consolidation of peace must be resolved. Sudan reiterates its commitment to the trilateral initiative of the U.S., African Union and the Arab League to ease the suffering in Blue Nile, South Kordofan and Darfur.
