Paris - Three German tourists were killed in south-eastern France when they were trapped by rising waters while canyoning, police said Thursday.

The three victims, two young women and their guide, were climbing in a river gorge when they were swept away by waters swollen by a recent storm.

Nine other members of their group, all aged between 25 and 35, were rescued.

'They are physically well, but very distressed psychologically,' the sub-prefect of Castellane, Serge Bideau, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Bideau said that the gorge was usually ideal for beginners because of the shallow water in its stream. But on Wednesday a storm dumped large amounts of rain in the region.

'The water rose very fast,' Bideau said. 'We think that the group was struck by a wave that was more than 2 metres high.'
