FRANKFURT, Germany – Airport operator Fraport AG looks back on an eventful first half 2012 at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base. FRA registered 5.4 million passengers in the reporting month, a plus of 5.4 percent and a new historic peak for a June month. The accumulated maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) climbed by 2.8 percent to about 2.5 million metric tons in June 2012. The number of aircraft movements in June 2012 increased by 4.6 percent year-on-year to 42,715 takeoffs and landings. The growth in passenger figures, which has been in progress for more than a year, was strengthened in June 2012 by the statistical base effect of June 2011 when the thinning out of the flight schedule was undertaken to accommodate inauguration of Deutsche Flugshierung’s (DFS) new air traffic control tower at FRA.

Frankfurt Airport’s cargo volume dropped by 3.4 percent year-on-year to 180,110 metric tons in June 2012.

From January to June 2012, passenger figures rose by 3.4 percent at FRA to an all time high of 27.4 million passengers. Uncertainty in the global economy, the European debt crisis, and FRA’s nighttime curfew led to a noticeable 9.8 percent drop in airfreight tonnage to about one million metric tons. Aircraft movements during the first six months of the year remained stable at 238,362 take-offs and landings, compared to the same period in 2011. The MTOW declined slightly by 0.8 percent to about 14.2 million metric tons โ€“ due to the loss of some cargo flights.

At Fraport’s five majority-owned airports โ€“ Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Antalya (AYT), Burgas (BOJ), Varna (VAR) and Lima (LIM) โ€“ the total number of passengers rose by 3.9 percent to about 10.4 million passengers in June 2012. In the reporting month, the Group airports handled a total of 201,324 metric tons of cargo (airfreight and airmail), dropping by 2.6 percent. In contrast, total aircraft movements rose by 2.3 percent to nearly 80,000 takeoffs and landings.

From January to June 2012, these Fraport Group airports served almost 44 million passengers, an increase of 2.8 percent compared to the same period in 2011. Cargo tonnage fell by nine percent to approximately 1.1 million metric tons. The Group’s total number of takeoffs and landings increased by 0.2 percent in the first half of 2012.
