Hotel on Barbados’ South Coast recognized for improvement of sustainability performance

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe today announced recertification of the Accra Beach Hotel & Spa, Barbados.

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe today announced recertification of the Accra Beach Hotel & Spa, Barbados. Located on the lively South Coast of the island, 20 minutes from Barbados airport and 15 minutes from the picturesque capital Bridgetown, the hotel is committed to constantly improving its sustainability performance.

Green Globe Certification’s CEO, Guido Bauer, said: “Accra Beach Hotel’s sustainability program straddles all relevant departments and is clearly a part of the ethos of the property. It demonstrates the property’s commitment to sustainability goals. The hotel’s Green Team constantly strives to find new avenues to address and things to improve – it is admirable.”

Nikki McChlery, Accra Beach Hotel and Spa’s Green Team Ambassador, said: “Accra Beach Hotel & Spa is proud to be recertified as a Green Globe property. This hotel was one of the first to achieve such an honor just a few years ago.”

As the hotel seeks to undergo a US$1.5 million soft refurbishment of 142 guest rooms and suites, a number of practices learned are being put into place – such as the continued improvement on use of energy through the use of fluorescent energy-saving bulbs. A plan is currently in place to further reduce energy usage by implementing more energy efficient appliances and LED lighting by the end of the year 2012. Toilets are being replaced with models that use less water per flush.

Further improvements include a Pollution Management Plan, which covers the case of a spillage of any hazardous cleaning or maintenance products, and a Waste Management System whereby all recyclable and landfill waste is weighed and recorded and assessed on a waste diversion table. Accra Beach Hotel & Spa also has a 7 percent waste reduction goal in place, which is to be realized by July 2012.

“We also have included more activities regarding our corporate responsibility – such as involving one of the community’s schools into our Educational Nature Marine Walks, which are carried out by our Guest Services team. We also invite our guests to participate in the same school’s reading program,” added Ms. McChlery.
