CONAKRY - Guinea's Tourism Ministry reports that the West African country has welcomed over 100,000 visitors in 2011.

An official from the ministry said that this record number of tourists was achieved because of the adoption of a new tourism policy and the promotion efforts by the new governmental team led by President Alpha Conde.

"I think we have achieved a record number of visitors because never before has Guinea's tourism sector received more than 50,000 visitors within a year," the official said.

In its five-year plan to develop tourism, the Guinean government sets aside more than 200 million U.S. dollars to develop tourism infrastructure, especially hotels in the capital Conakry and in the interior of the country to host more clients.

The official from the Tourism Ministry said Guinea is one of the few countries in West Africa with huge tourism potential and enormous natural sceneries whose exploitation does not require a lot of money.
