One of this year's series of glamorous royal weddings took place on October 13 in the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan when the fifth Dragon King, 31-year-old King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, married Jetsun Pema, 21-year-old daughter of an airline pilot. The wedding took place in a 17th-century fortress-monastery in ancient Punakha and began at precisely 8:20 am – the designated time set by royal astrologers.

Photographer Jared Barclay was one of the limited number of Western journalists invited to cover the royal wedding. Mr. Barclay was granted an audience with the King of Bhutan in 2005 - when he was still a prince at the time - and Mr. Barclay describes the King as being exceedingly intelligent, admiring his visionary thinking.
