Frankfurt, Germany - Airline operator Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Wednesday that it has canceled 62 flights because of a pilot strike at its CityLine, Germanwings and Eurowings subsidiaries.

Thomas Jachnow, a spokesman for the Cologne-based airline, said flights out of Stuttgart, Berlin, Duesseldorf, Hamburg and Bremen have been affected, with most of them domestic routes or nearby European destinations.

Union Vereinigung Cockpit said the walkout, which lasted from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. (0330-0600 GMT), was called because of an ongoing dispute over wage increases that has been going on for months. A total of 97 flights were affected, including those canceled and others that were delayed.

"Because employers haven't presented a negotiable offer in negotiations that have been going on for months, personnel representatives of all three airlines see no alternative but to declare talks a failure," Vereinigung Cockpit said in a statement.

Shares of Lufthansa, Europe's second-biggest airline, were down 2.3 percent to €16.25 (US$25.41) in Frankfurt trading.
