On October 25, 2011 the Telegraph Travel Awards named Cape Town a runner up in their Favorite Cities Worldwide category. La Residence in Franschhoek featured as runner up in the Favorite Hotels Worldwide category.

In August 2011, voting polls opened and 23,000 Telegraph readers were surveyed on their favorite travel places, experiences, and tourism and hospitality service providers.

The Telegraph Travel Awards 2011 honor top destinations and companies in categories from Favorite Country Worldwide to Favorite Tour Operator Worldwide and Favorite Travel Website.

This year’s Favorite City Worldwide honor went to New York in the USA, while Cape Town, South Africa, and Venice, Italy, were runners up. Villa d'Este in Lake Como, Italy, was voted Favorite Hotel Worldwide and runners up were La Residence in Franschhoek, South Africa, and Shangri La's Barr Al Jissah in Muscat, Oman. Favorite Travel Website went to TripAdvisor, the world’s best-known, customer-driven travel advisory site, and the USA was voted Favorite Country Worldwide, with runners up New Zealand and Australia.

CEO of Cape Town Tourism Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold said: “In addition to the announcement of Cape Town as World Design Capital 2014 yesterday, we received news of another accolade for Cape Town – that of runner up in the Telegraph Travel Awards 2011 Favorite City Worldwide category. Accolades such as these affirm the allure of challenger brands like Cape Town; competing against established destinations further strengthen our brand as a city of inspiration and affirm our vision of establishing Cape Town as one of the world’s greatest cities to visit, live, work, study, and invest in.”
