Finnair gets ready to fly Angry Birds to Singapore on its longest flight ever

Aug 31, 2011

In a world first, Finnair is preparing to fly Angry Birds for their longest ever flight. Millions of fans worldwide can tail them as they make their way from Helsinki to Singapore on September 20.

During the historic Finnair flight, fans of the video game will have the bragging rights to being the first to compete in the Angry Birds Asian Challenge played at an altitude of 10,000 metres.

Developed by Finnish media entertainment company Rovio, the highly addictive Angry Birds video games for mobile platforms has quickly become a worldwide phenomenon since its launch in December 2009.

Angry Birds has been praised for its successful combination of addictive gameplay, humour and wit. In the game, players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed at and within a variety of structures.

“This avian alliance is one example of Finnair’s creative, fresh way of operating. Finnair is a significant player in traffic between Asia and Europe, and our goal is to double the number of Asian flights to 140 flights per week by 2020. It’s great to be involved in bringing Finnish innovation to Asia,” says Finnair’s Vice President, Global Marketing Jarkko Konttinen.

“Although the Angry Birds have already flown almost everywhere in the world, the trip to Singapore will be the birds’ longest continuous flight to date. The Angry Birds game has been downloaded onto various platforms over 350 million times, and we are delighted to be able to bring new Angry Birds games and experiences to a growing fan base,” says Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio’s Mighty Eagle and Marketing Manager.

You, too, could be on the flight to Singapore. Simply log on to www.finnair.com/angrybirds and tell us why you are one of Angry Birds’ most avid fans by September 12. The five most popular fans and two to three favourites selected by a jury will be awarded tickets to be on the Angry Birds flight from Helsinki to Singapore.

During the flight, Angry Birds fans and other passengers onboard will be able to participate in in the competition on games consoles which have been specially programmed for this event. The winner will have the honour of being crowned the first Angry Birds Asian Challenge champion when the plane touches down at Changi International Airport on September 21.

A real live Angry Bird will also be present on the flight.

Tweets detailing the swish of wings and the demise of pigs during the competition will be sent during the flight. Fans can follow the exciting goings-on of the competition in real time at www.finnair.com/angrybirds

Adds Petteri Kostermaa, Finnair’s Sales Director for Singapore and South East Asia: “We want to be able to always delight and surprise Finnair fans and customers with fresh ideas that engage their imagination, ideas that they don’t normally expect from an airline such as this Angry Birds Asian Challenge which will be played at 10,000 metres in the air.

“We hope that with this Challenge, we will be able to make fans of Angry Birds in Singapore and around the world into friends of Finnair as well.”

Finnair flies daily nonstop flights from Singapore to Helsinki with connections to a network of more than 50 European cities.

I hope Finnair and Rovio would allow more participants in the competition. Aside from the chance to fly from Finland to Singapore, what will be the prize of the tournament winner? There’s also no information given as to what version of Angry Birds will be played during the flight. I hope Finnair and Rovio can give more information.

Finnair will undoubtedly gain some fans and probably some sales from this, very clever, marketing partnership.

I am a bit weary though as to who will benefit the most out of this... Maybe angry birds will come out on top ;)
