DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (eTN) - African countries dream that a day will come when countries will be united and share common interests to solve the problems currently facing this poorest and impoverished continent.

Foreign ministers representing almost all African countries are meeting in Tanzania’s northern tourist city of Arusha in a closed-door session to discuss modalities that would help unite the continent.

The ministers ,who are in an extraordinary meeting of the African Union (AU) in Arusha’s posh Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge, have been looking at measures to bring together African countries and bring the continent free from its current problems including civil wars and social unrest.

Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula said the ministers were discussing in their two-day meeting, the ways that would help the African Union be strengthened to unite the continent as a single bloc.

Minister Wetangula said foreign ministers were brainstorming on the current situation in the continent to contemplate on best options that could bring together economic blocs in the continent. These blocs are the East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), Economic Commission for West African States (ECOWAS), among others.

On current political stalemate in Zimbabwe, the Kenyan minister said they [minister] were not in position to discuss problems facing a single state. Instead the ministers are looking at the continent as a single bloc.

He said the question of Zimbabwe would be solved by SADC member states, which have been mandated to handle the problems between the outgoing President Robert Mugabe and the opposition leader Morgan Tsvingirai.

Rich with natural resources including wildlife and abundant tourist attractions, Africa remains the least developed continent in the world with frequent conflicts in some countries like Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and recently, the looming Zimbabwe crisis.
