Qantas pilots may walk off the job briefly
Qantas facing pilot walkouts
Australian carrier Qantas may soon see its pilots walk off the job briefly, which would amount to the first such walkout the airline has seen in more than four decades.
Crews are seeking greater job security at a time their employer is studying restructuring international operations, which may lead to some routes being dropped. Qantas plans to announce the restructuring in late August.
The Australian and International Pilots Association has okayed strikes of up to 48 hours by long-haul pilots. However, a prominent union official says the union prefers to reach a negotiated settlement with the airline.
Qantas engineers earlier okayed brief walkouts in a dispute revolving around salaries and Qantas’ growing use of non-Australian maintenance workers. The airline has taken a number of cost-cutting steps recently, including cancelling orders for planes.
