Puerto Rico has recently become one of the hot filming locations for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, released in UK cinemas today.

Johnny Depp, alongside co-star Penelope Cruz shot in the exotic location of Fajardo and at the Castillo San Cristobel situated in Old San Juan, a UNESCO protected, partially enclosed fortress that stands separate from the main island and is home to some of the island’s most impressive historic buildings.

The northeast coast of Puerto Rico provides filmmakers and tourists with a natural desert island location, boasting crystal white sand and clear turquoise waters with the backdrop of the misty mountains and rainforest. In 2009, films crews travelled to San Juan to shoot The Rum Diary, also with Johnny Depp, which showcases the iconic, narrow streets and hidden bars known as chinchorros.

Puerto Rico, the largest island of the Lesser Antilles and the smallest of the Greater Antilles, is renowned for its 212 miles of spectacular coastline and has long been known for the creation of Reggaeton and salsa, its fine selection of rum, and its breathtaking ecological phenomenon. Visitors to Puerto Rico can now experience their own Pirates of the Caribbean adventure.
