Ban voices sorrow after deadly Minsk subway explosion

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed sadness after an explosion today at a station in the metro system of Minsk, the Belarusian capital, killed at least 11 people and injured dozens of others.

Media reports state that an explosion occurred at Oktyabrskaya station in the centre of Minsk just before 6 p.m., during the early evening rush hour period for commuters.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson Mr. Ban offered “his sincerest condolences to the people of Belarus and, in particular, to the families of the victims. He wishes those injured a speedy recovery.”
