The JAL Group today announced plans to operate daily roundtrip extra flights from Tokyo (Haneda) and Osaka (Itami) to Sendai Airport between April 13 and April 20, 2011 utilizing Boeing 737-800s with a seating capacity of 165. Sendai Airport has been closed since March 12, 2011 after sustaining damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami last month. It is scheduled to reopen on April 13, 2011 as announced by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) today.
As operating conditions at Sendai Airport remain subject to change, JAL will extend the period of temporary suspensions of its scheduled roundtrip flights from Fukuoka, Osaka (Itami) and Sapporo to Sendai until May 31, 2011.
The airline has to date operated more than 700 extra flights to airports in the north, namely Yamagata, Hanamaki, Akita and Aomori from Tokyo, Osaka and Sapporo since March 12, and also scheduled to use larger aircraft on some of these routes to increase capacity. JAL will continue to utilize its resources to support the early recovery of the Tohoku region that was most affected by the recent disaster.
