Mar 13, 2011

The Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company returned triumphantly from Seychelles carnival 2011 yesterday, having won 1st prize for the best international performance. The Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company beat presentations from 20 other countries to lift the beautifully-crafted gold trophy sculpted by local artist Tom Bowers. Participants from Zimbabwe were placed third, with Indonesia taking second place.

Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company put on a fine performance with presentations from South Connections, Beeraahaar, and Sunshine International masquerade costume bands, who wore a range of costume themes such as the White Queen, Butterflies, and the Lion King.

CSI, Caribbean Steelband International, also performed to great acclaim on the three days of the carnival. One highlight was a unique presentation on board HMS Richmond where they entertained the crew and many important dignitaries from all over the world including Ambassadors from China, Russia, France, and guests of the British High Commission.

The Seychelles carnival was supported by delegations from 20 countries and different cultures from around the world including performers from Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago. The carnival parade also included the Russian, Indian, and French navy.

The entire population of the Seychelles, close to 100,000 islanders and tourists, descended on the heart of the capital city of Victoria to watch the first Seychelles carnival for 75 years.

Clare Holder, Director of the Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company, said: “We are thankful to be bringing back this breath-takingly beautiful gold trophy. It will be proudly displayed in our trophy cabinet.

“We were very well received by the local community with all of the islanders coming out to cheer us on the route.

“The Seychelles are stunning islands, and the people are very friendly and welcoming. The hospitality we have received has been outstanding.

“We would really like to thank Alain St.Ange, Chief Executive Officer of the tourist authority, and the British High Commission, for making us feel so welcome. It was a truly amazing experience."
