Bronx Tour bus disaster

13 killed riding a New York Tour Bus

Mar 12, 2011

Thirteen passengers were killed when their tour bus overturned on the New England Thruway in Co-Op City, Bronx, this morning.

The bus was on its way from the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut to Manhattan's Chinatown when it overturned at approximately 5:30 am according to New York City Fire Department officials.

When the bus skidded into a post on the side of the road, the post cut through the top of the vehicle and nearly sheared the entire roof off.

The accident has shut down traffic in all southbound lanes of Interstate 95 between Boston Post Road exit 15 and Hutchinson River Parkway exit 14.

Fire officials say as many as 33 passengers were on board, and that six people were critically injured.

Another two people received serious injuries and 11 had minor injuries.

The injured were taken to St. Barnabas and Jacobi hospitals.

Officials say the driver survived.

FDNY officials say the bus flipped over and struck a highway sign pole, which sheered off the roof down nearly the entire length of the vehicle.

According to published reports, officials are looking for a tractor trailer that is believed to have made contact with the bus in the moments before the crash.

The bus is owned by World Wide Tours based in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It was set to make a stop at Allen Street in the Bowery and then Chinatown.
