Colombo, Sri Lanka (eTN) - Police yesterday arrested seven people suspected of attacking a tourist hotel in Maravila, Chillaw on last Wednesday (Dec 5). The tourist hotel, Aquarius Sports Resort is owned by a German national.

According to the hotel owner Dietmar Doering the group of suspects had caused serious damages to 12 hotel rooms, amounting to Rs. 20 million. Many tourists who had been there in the hotel at the time of the attack have already left the Island after the terrifying experience.

The group of assailants said to have led by a driver of a ruling party politician in the area. The incident drew wide criticism in privately owned media as the police too had given a languid response to the incident. The incident was widely discussed in the local electronic media as this new threat from the political henchmen will further destroy the limping tourist industry in the war torn Island.

Sri Lanka police recently established a new division to provide security to the tourism industry and to curb activities that harm the good image of the country.

Police said the suspects would be produced at the District Court tomorrow.
