Boney M frontman Bobby Farrell dies in Russian hotel
(eTN) - The frontman of the legendary disco group Boney M, Bobby Farrell, was found dead last night in his room at the Ambassador Hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The famous group, whose hits included Sunny, Daddy Cool, Ma Baker, Rasputin, Love For Sale, By the Rivers of Babylon, and many others, peaked in popularity in the late 1970s. The gruop had just finished its New Year Russian tour and Farrell was scheduled to depart for Italy on Thursday.
The death of the artist was first reported by the Dutch news site nu.nl, that published the information, citing Farrell’s agent, John Seyne. Later the news about Farrell's death were confirmed by Saint Petersburg police to Fontanka.ru. According to that publication, Farrell had arrived at St. Petersburg with the group for several appearances at numerous New Year’s corporate parties. During the show on Wednesday night, Farrell fell ill and began to choke. He was taken to the Ambassador Hotel, where the group was staying.
On Thursday morning, around 9:00 am he was found dead in his suite. According to sources, the artist died of natural causes. No signs of violence were found on site. The singer’s agent confirmed that Farrell has had health problems and that similar attacks have happened in the past. Bobby Farrell was 61.
