Safety situation may destroy tourism and families in Mexico

The lack of safety on the streets and the economic situation of the Mexican family are responsible for the climate of uncertainty in some tourism destinations in the country’s center, north, and south, the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels (AMHM) informed.

Apart from the border cities, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Morelia, and Michoacan are other destinations that will have a difficult situation, because the people fear to travel along the roads leading to those cities, said AMHM president Armando de la Cruz.

Hotel reservations have only registered 30 percent, when it was around 80 percent in previous years during this season, according to the last AMHM report.

The absence of Mexicana de Aviacion Airlines has negatively influenced airfares and reservations available, so travelling by plane is not a good choice for many families.

Regarding that, Jorge Hernandez, president of the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies, said that flights en route for beach destinations such as Cancun are saturated, because the 22,000 daily seats that Mexicana offered are no longer available.
