This year's five millionth tourist to Taiwan arrived this weekend and was greeted with a NT$500,000 (roughly US$17,000) cash prize.

Japanese tourist Kimura Mizuho received an enthusiastic welcome at Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport on Friday night. A party was then held in her honor on Saturday.

Premier Wu Den-yih spoke at Kimura's party. He said that it was the first time in Taiwan's sixty years of tourism that the number of visitors broke five million in a single year. He also thanked all the foreign visitors for choosing Taiwan as their travel destination.

Kimura is a first-time visitor to Taiwan and said she had come for the local cuisine. She said that receiving the prize upon arrival was like stepping into a dream.
