Tourists rescued in Lukla

1,500 stranded tourists rescued in Nepal

Nov 21, 2010

Nepalese authorities on Saturday rescued 1,500 tourists with the help of helicopters and planes after they were stranded at Lukla, gateway to Mt. Everest, for more than a week.

The trekkers and tourist guides were rescued with the help of Army and private helicopters and planes, Sarad Pradhan, media coordinator of the Nepal Tourism Board, said. He said they were stranded because of bad weather in the region that hampered the operation of flights to and from Lukla.

The Army helicopters alone rescued more than 200 tourists on Saturday.
