8 tourists killed, 40 injured in Egyptian bus crash

Nov 21, 2010

Eight tourists were killed and 40 were injured in the Egyptian tour bus crash on a mountain road near Hurghada.

The Associated Press reports that the survivors of a crash near an Egyptian Red Sea resort said Sunday that the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle.

The crash happened early Saturday on a winding mountain road near Hurghada.

"On our way back, the driver was going very fast," said a Russian tourist injured in the crash. "He stepped on the gas, very fast. He was not able to control the vehicle and the bus turned over."

Egypt's official news agency confirmed that eight died in the accident.

According to AP, three Russians and a Ukrainian woman were among the dead and the identities of the others were still unknown.

The seriously injured were airlifted to hospitals in Cairo about 500 kilometres away.

Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic rules. An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents in the country annually.
