By Linda Straker, eTN, Grenada | Nov 20, 2010

(eTN) - The incident occurred around 10:15 am on Friday, November 19, 2010, within the popular Carenage, St. George’s area. Joe Morain from the rural parish of St. David snatched a bag from a visiting couple who were cruising on the Maasdam that was berthed at the Melville Street Cruise Port.

Morain, age 19, endeavored to flee the scene of the incident but was pursued and apprehended by a vigilant civilian. He was then handed over to the officers of the Central Police Station who made arrangements for his immediate court appearance.

Morain was charged with stealing and appeared before the St. George’s Magistrate Court where he was found guilty and sentenced to six months in prison and six strokes.

Grenada is in the middle of the 2010/2011 cruise ship season and thousands of cruise visitors are scheduled to visit Grenada during the period, which officially ends in April 2011.
