GRENADA (eTN) - Grenada is to undergo a major rebranding of its tourism product during 2011 as it seeks to attract more visitors to the destination.

With its focus on the traditional markets such as Caricom, Europe, and the USA, the rebranding is expected to focus heavily on the dive, wedding, honeymoon, and sport tourism sectors.

“During the year, my government will undertake a major rebranding of Grenada as a destination. Additionally, our strategic marketing focus will be aimed at attracting visitors,” head of state Sir Carlyle Glean said when he delivered the traditional throne speech during the ceremonial opening of parliament on Friday, October 15, 2010.

The Governor General also disclosed that it’s the intention of the Ruling National Democratic Congress headed by Tillman Thomas to create policy guidelines for the commercialization of some tourism sites and attractions. "This,” he said, “is to ensure [attractions] are properly managed and developed.”

Chairman of the Grenada Board of Tourism Mr. Richard Strachan said that the strategy is not yet finalised, but it will involve the promotion of the island from the point of view of “what the destination can do [for] the visitor.”

Other areas of high priority will be cultural entertainment and the incorporation of tourism studies in the school’s curriculum.

It was also disclosed that the Thomas administration will continue to prioritize on the transformative sectors so as to lay the foundation for sustained growth. “We believe that sustained growth, poverty reduction, and employment creation will come primarily from agriculture and agribusiness construction, information and communication technology, tourism, energy development, as well as health and education services,” Sir Carlyle said in the address.
