City entry fee proposed for Venice visitors

Your next trip to Venice may cost you more. The city is about to start charging tourists an entrance fee.

Under draft plan, drawn up by the Italian government, Venetian authorities would be allowed to collect a one-off fee from tourists arriving to Venice by plane, train and cruise ship, according to telegraph.co.uk

The cost of the fee is still to be determined, but it is expected to be rather nominal. For instance, a one euro tax on all cruise ship passengers had been proposed by former Venice's mayor in the past.

Current Venice's mayor, Giorgio Orsoni, welcomed the entree tax, for many of Venice's 20,000,000 million yearly visitors are "one-day tourists", who opt not to spend a night and bring their own provisions with them, therefore denying the city much-needed tourist revenue.
