Restored monuments attract Delhi tourists
New Delhi - Seventeen historical monuments given a facelift and illuminated for the Commonwealth Games are attracting a large number of tourists and visitors, an official said Thursday.
Most of these were lesser known monuments but have great historical significance. Most of them were in a dilapidated condition due to neglect and encroachment.
Ahead of the Commonwealth Games that began Oct 3, the Delhi government in consultation with experts decided to give new life to the monuments.
Workers used chemicals to remove soot, dirt, moss and lichen deposit accumulated on their surface over the years. Some were beautified through landscaping and new pathways.
On top of it, the authorities decided to illuminate them during the Games.
'A large number of tourists now throng these monuments,' the official said.
They include the Mutiny Memorial/Fateh Garh in the Northern Ridge, Gol Gumbad near Lodi Road flyover, Tomb of Bijri Khan in R.K. Puram's Sector 3 and the Mehrauli Archaeological Park near Qutab Minar.
The department of archaeology, which is responsible for the facelift of Delhi monuments, has also prepared a list of 250 monuments to be conserved in a phased manner, the official said.

It's wonderful that restoration and illumination of monuments has taken place in fascinating Delhi - a city of countless monuments. Ideally worth a visit for three full days because of its rich heritage, I do hope the tempo doesn't slow down after the commonwealth games are over. Monuments can be compared to a fragile ecosystem. It needs plenty of care and concern.
