Aviation news: China Airlines joins SkyTeam global airline alliance

Sep 14, 2010

TAIPEI - China Airlines, the flag carrier of Taiwan, signed a letter of intent Tuesday to join the SkyTeam global airline alliance. The process is expected to be completed by mid-2011.

The addition of China Airlines to SkyTeam complements the well anchored position of China Southern, that had joined the alliance just a few months ago, solidifying SkyTeam's unmatched presence in Greater China.

The Wall Street Journal reports that at a press conference in Taipei after recruiting its newest member, the alliance's senior executives said that SkyTeam plans to expand in Asia, particularly in South Asia and India, to capture potential air traffic growth in the region.

China Airlines Chairman Philip Wei said: "Joining SkyTeam is a long-term development strategy for China Airlines, and for many years we have been actively promoting various types of cooperation with SkyTeam member airlines with this objective in mind. As the first Taiwanese airline to join the world-class alliance, our strategic target is to continuously strengthen profitability and boost international market competitiveness."

Headquartered in Taipei, China Airlines is the largest airline of Taiwan, home to one of the world’s most dynamic technology-driven economies that also possesses abundant tourism opportunities and booming aviation industry prospects.

China Airlines serves 93 cities in 28 countries and has a fleet comprised of 66 aircraft
